Why is Home Sewage Pump Maintenance Important?

Failed sewerage system with sewage overflow

The words ‘sewage’ and ‘pump failure’ aren’t things you want to hear in the one sentence. Because sewage pumps live in an extremely adverse environment it is crucial that they undergo regular cleaning and maintenance to ensure they perform as you need them to.

When a sewage pump fails several things can happen. You can end up with raw sewage bubbling up onto your lawn which is obviously not ideal! Having to shut off the sewage pump for any length of time can result in needing to restrict water usage (i.e. not being able to flush your toilet) until a technician can remedy the problem.

At PASLR we put a lot of emphasis on the importance of regular maintenance for all home pressure systems, including sewage systems.

Info iconThe deadliest enemies to the sewage pump are wet wipes and sanitary products. Flushed down the toilet, these accumulate, rolling up into a ball and jamming the sewage pump. If left to build they up can destroy the sewage pump, however the right control panel can help prevent sewage pump burnout in the event of a blockage. Talk to us!

Drainage and stormwater pump servicing

If your drainage or stormwater pump sits idle for long periods of time it could seize up when you really need it. Ensuring that your drainage or stormwater pump is in good working condition means that when extreme weather hits or excess water threatens your home, you’ll be prepared.

Along with regular maintenance, there are four simple things you can do to help keep your stormwater or drainage pump operating efficient

  1. Keep your gutters and grates clear to avoid the pump getting clogged with garden debris
  2. Make sure your pump isn’t sitting in sludge at the bottom of the pit – if it is, clear it out
  3. If you notice pooling around the chamber, this could be a sign the pump has failed and further investigation is required
  4. Fit an alarm to your pump so you are alerted to any faults immediately – if caught quickly this could help avoid further damage to the pump or system

What is involved in regular pump maintenance?

On a maintenance service call we check your pump and controller are running properly and that there are no blockages or build up in the pump or pipework. We will also give everything a good clean – all the things that help keep the system running efficiently.

We often find sewage pumps have been under specified, so we’ll also make sure you have the right sewage pump for the job and everything is running as efficiently as possible.

We also recommend that every so often you have the pit vacuumed out to avoid an excessive build-up of gunk.

Getting on a regular maintenance schedule with PASLR means you don’t need to try to remember when you last serviced your pump. We’ll keep track of things for you and get in touch when it’s time to book your next maintenance call.
