How does granular activated carbon work?

Activated carbon is commonly used in water filtration systems to remove impurities, odours, and improve the overall taste of the water. Here’s what you need to know about activated carbon and how it works.

How does granular activated carbon work

What is activated carbon and how does it work?

Activated carbon is a form of charcoal that has been exposed to high temperature steam. Coconut shell provides the best quality carbon. It comes in granular form (GAC), or powdered and bonded block form (carbon block).

Activated carbon acts like a sponge, removing impurities from the water by the process of absorption. As water flows through the filter, the activated carbon acts like a magnet, attracting and binding to contaminants such as chlorine, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds.

Does activated carbon remove THMs from water?

Yes! While chlorine can be an effective disinfectant in water treatment, when it reacts with organic matter in water it can form trihalomethanes (THMs) which are known carcinogens. It can also leave your drinking water tasting like a swimming pool. Activated carbon in a water filter will reduce both chlorine and THMs and improve the taste and smell of your drinking water. The best thing about activated carbon is that it does not remove minerals essential for health.

What is KDF Media and how does it work?

KDF alloy media (Kinetic Degradation Fluxion) is a copper/zinc alloy. It is used in water filtration to reduce aluminium and low levels of undesirable heavy metals such as lead. It is also very effective at converting free chlorine to a chloride which is tasteless, odourless and harmless.

How do you set yourself up with an activated carbon water filter?

Microlene premium water filters such as MPP and MQCPP contain premium grade granular activated carbon and KDF media … and have a lifespan of up to 3 years or 30,000 litres (whichever comes first). These can be used in under bench and bench top water filter systems.

Why is it important to change my water filter regularly?

Your filter works hard to absorb toxins and impurities in the water so that you don’t.  All filters come with a life span and to avoid the toxins being released back into the water, it is important to perform regular maintenance and replace the filter when it is due.

When you buy or replace your filter with PASLR, we’ll keep track of when you’re due for a replacement filter and send you a friendly reminder.
