Maintenance checklist for UV systems

Microlene Centurion XS UV three-stage filtration and disinfectionIf you have a UV water treatment system these are the things that need to be checked to ensure it’s still working effectively, sterilising the bugs in your water.

Remember UV is the ONLY system that can guarantee your water is entirely free from harmful organisms and bacteria, including cryptosporidium. But if it’s not maintained, you’re still at risk of catching something nasty.

    • Cleaning the quartz sleeve to ensure optimal UV Transmission (UVT)
    • Replacing the lamp (just because it’s glowing doesn’t mean its intensity is optimal) and ensuring replacement of filters is completed at the same time
    • Replacing O-Rings/pressure rings to prevent leaks
    • Controller needs to be reset to prevent annoying beeping/alarm

Depending on manufacturers recommendations, we’d suggest annual check-ups as a minimum.  Given the fragile nature of quartz sleeves (they break very easily) and the various elements of these systems, you’re always best to call in a professional for a regular check/clean/change.

Hazard IconDid you know: You should never look at a glowing UV lamp – it can burn your eyes (a condition called Arc Eye – nasty)!  A safety feature on the chamber of most UV systems means the lamp should turn off when the unit is opened. However not all systems have them and ‘fail-safes’ have been know to fail … so it’s always a good idea to employ a professional!
