Skipping Water Filter & Pump Maintenance Leads to Emergencies — Here’s Why

Clean filters compare to dirty filters

Clean filters vs dirty filters – what state are your water filters in? If they’re this bad (these are the filters from Karen and Dave’s place) you’ll be heading for an emergency callout when your pump or controller stops working.

Long time PASLR customers Karen and Dave (not their real names as they are a bit embarrassed by this story) did not replace their water filters when they were due and found out the hard way that regular maintenance is not something to take lightly when you’re depending on a water filter and pump system for everyday life and comfort (such as showers, toilet flushing, sewage or drinking water).

Like many people, they thought servicing their water filters once a year was enough. Needless to say, the filters blocked and blew the water pump’s Torrium controller (which thankfully saved the pump) and flooded the whole system. Karen first became aware there was an issue when she was showering and there was no water pressure. As is often the case, this happened on the weekend … so they needed a fix quick smart.

They called PASLR on Sunday and our technician went out to site immediately, arriving around 2.30pm.

“Upon arrival, the site was found to be flooded due to the water pump running continuously,” says Kelvin Boyd, Pumps Team Leader for PASLR. “Investigation identified an active leak coming from the pump controller which had split at the rear due to increased back pressure caused by severely blocked water filters. Because the filters hadn’t been changed they were heavily contaminated, so the pump was attempting to force water through the system unsuccessfully, resulting in over-pressurisation and failure of the controller.”

Our technician replaced the failed pump controller with a suitable replacement carried in the service vehicle and installed a new set of filters. The pump system was then reinstated, tested, and returned to normal operation.

Needless to say, Karen and Dave are now going to complete regular scheduled maintenance on their system, realising it will not only keep them in the style of comfort they are accustomed to, but also cost them less in the long run.

“This could have been much worse,” says Kelvin Boyd from PASLR.  “Had the Torrium controller not saved their pump, the actual pump would have seized, making the fix significantly more expensive. It’s just not worth taking the risk of not doing regular servicing on systems you rely on everyday.”

If you’re a PASLR customer you don’t even need to remember when your service is due – we send out reminders for servicing and filter changes. If it’s been a while since you’ve had things looked at – whether it’s water filters, a water pump, a sewage pump, a whole house water treatment system ….or anything related – get in touch.
