Meet the crew: Fortune Chiriseri – Electrician

Fortune joined the PASLR team in May 2023. A qualified electrician, his work involves helping commercial customers with electrical maintenance issues including lighting, switch boards and all types of general electrical work.

Fortune and his wife came to New Zealand in March 2023, making the move from their home in Mutoko, Zimbabwe where Fortune worked as a fully qualified electrician. “We came here because there are a lot more opportunities for us in New Zealand,” he says.

While his skills are transferable, Fortune has had to sit two exams and undergo a period of on-the-job assessment to work as an electrician here in New Zealand.

Prior to PASLR, Fortune had a short stint working at Auckland Prison installing CCTV systems and heat pumps, but says he much prefers the PASLR work environment.

“I really enjoy the independence of this role – I get to do all sorts of things, it is always different,” he says.

Coming from a landlocked country like Zimbabwe, Fortune says his new favourite thing to do is go to the beach – even in winter.

Tip from the field: One of the most common causes of flickering in fluorescent lights is a faulty, or dislodged starter – the switch which ignites the tubes and lamps when they first start up. So, always replace the starter with the fluorescent tube.
