Seven things to get sorted before the silly season

Christmas is just around the corner so in order to help you prepare your workplace for the imminent silly season shut down, we’ve compiled seven top tips to leave your workplace in good shape when everyone enjoys a well-earned break.

  1. Don’t let the water in your cooler go stagnant over the break – when you’re done for the year remove and empty the water bottle (maybe use it to give those office plants one last water), take out any excess water from the reservoir, give the drip tray a clean and switch the power off. Make sure you store any full bottles out of direct sunlight (especially if the air con will be turned off).
  2. Power off – it may be a no-brainer but turning electrical appliances off at the wall will save you power and make sure things don’t get too hot. It’s also a good opportunity to check that your testing and tagging is up to date so you’re not liable should anything go wrong when you’re not there.

  1. Keep your emergency lighting working while you’re not – office buildings must have emergency lighting that works in order to meet their Building Warrant of Fitness. You also never know when someone might pop into the office to pick something up or do a bit of work and you don’t want them to be caught in the dark should an emergency happen.
  2. Stay safe with smart security lighting – keeping the lights on when you’re not there can help deter unwanted intruders (we know break-ins often ramp up over Christmas). If you don’t already have them, it’s worth considering the set and forget security of LED floodlights or upgrading to LED security lighting. It’s not too late to book a lighting maintenance call with one of our electricians or to get some help with security lighting solutions.

  1. Is it time to start using timers? – while you might be happy with a lights-off approach over the silly season, timers on your lights can be a good way to make it look like people are coming and going and help deter unwanted attention from those who are up to no good.
  2. Flush your taps to keep your water fresh – it’s always a good idea to run your taps for a minute or two when you come back to work after a prolonged period of inactivity to flush things out. While you’re doing that, check your water filter to see when it’s due to be replaced and make sure your team has great tasting water over the summer months.
  3. Check, check and check again – now is the time to take care of any minor fixes or maintenance – dripping taps, flickering lights, or doors and windows that aren’t closing properly – regular maintenance now is a much better (and cheaper) option than emergency maintenance over the Christmas period.
